About a quarter of people in the UK have mental health problems in any one year. These affect the way we think, feel and behave and may be due to life events, past experiences, our physical make-up or ongoing stresses. For some the experience can be mild and pass with time or a change in situation, while for others the problem can be longer-lasting and have a big impact on their lives.
To help us understand mental health problems, scientists have developed a language to describe them. You may know some of the names used (e.g. depression, anxiety). These describe the experiences that people have and not the people themselves and they can be helpful when thinking about treatment choice.
